Bee Adventurous this weekend

09__recgbo__pic1propertygaleriebild__grossThings to do in the city are endless.  So it is a bit surprising when I find myself doing the same crap over and over.  This week I am going to take my own advice and be adventurous by trying out some of these events.

Sometimes we all need a little intellectual stimulation and what better than a reading presented by Harper’s Magazine at the Housing Works Bookstore Café.  Tonight, Harper’s will host “Death: a literary celebration of the bitter end,” a reading featuring selections from the magazine and work by contributors Joseph O’Neill, Diane Williams, and Elif Batuman.  With the imminent decline of print media, it might be a good idea to attend these print related events while they still exist.  Event starts at 7:00pm.

Another pretty unique event going on this week is hosted by EPIC WIN, the nerdiest burlesque show in town.  Friday and Saturday, they will be re-interpreting the classic blockbuster film “GHOSTBUSTERS!,” at The Tank.  I volunteer at The Tank, a non-profit art space that supports artists through the means of space and it is a great place to catch off the beaten path shows.  They also have refreshments including cheap beer, which you can drink during shows.  I mean, how can you beat that?  But check out this show this weekend because I can’t imagine what it means to combine Ghostbusters & burlesque but I’m sure it will be entertaining.  Think, sexy Halloween.    Click here for Presale tickets.

BAMcinemaFEST, also just started and if you love indie film this is a great film festival to take advantage of.   It features new films from some of the brightest up-and-coming talents plus cool events.  Definitely take advantage of the outdoor screening of SXSW Jury Award winner Tiny Furniture, this Sunday.   Also if you are already in the hood to watch a film, Bamcafe is hosting Comedy Night, Friday night  at 9:30pm.  They will feature a hilarious showcase of local and national comic talents including Sean Patton, Ali wong, and Snakes.Part of BAMcafé Live.

Summer time and the livin’ is easy…

2010414-rooftop-films1

Finally it looks like summer is here and it couldn’t have come a moment sooner. If you are around for the long holiday weekend, while the rest of the city exits in droves, check out some of these hot happenings in town.

A good indication that summer is approaching by my time clock is when the Rooftop Film series starts. So far they have had an amazing line up and this week it only gets better. Tomorrow night Etienne!, a quirky movie about a man and his hamster premieres at Brooklyn Technical High school, which just happens to be in my new hood of Fort Greene. Doors open at 8pm with live music by Natureboy. Friday and Saturday, they will be featuring a series of short films, both of which look great. Not to mention, the after party that will have FREE radeberger pilsner at Fontana’s in the Lower East side.

If you feel like getting a little adventurous and in need of some water action, Good Peoples is throwing an all vinyl disco party on a boat! This monthly boat party takes place Friday, May 28th and can only accommodate 100 people, so get your tickets before they’re gone. Music will be provided by Lloydski and Vin Sol, both great DJ’s who promise a great show featuring some good oldies. Meet at Clipper City, Pier 17 at 9:30 and sets sail at 10. Tickets are $18 and available here.

Last but not least, one of my favorite spots in the summer is the Brooklyn Yard. If you are fortunate enough to have Monday off, come join the party with DJ’s, outdoor views of the heavenly Gowanus canal, food carts, booze, and lots of dancing.

Gay Life - The Paulinator: Live Out Proud!

Dance on the Pier @ Pier 54

Dance on the Pier @ Pier 54

Dictionary.com’s fourth definition of “Pride” states:  pleasure or satisfaction taken in something done by or belonging to oneself or believed to reflect credit upon oneself. That is precisely how I feel. After the horrific text message incident to my mom, I realized I’m finally comfortable enough with myself to admit openly and proudly that I am a gay man. This has been such an incredible journey and I am so thankful that I reached this part of my life when Marriage Equality is such a hot topic as well as during the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. As per usual, anytime something this momentous happens in my life, I like to celebrate and go all out! Well, I didn’t have to look very far because this month is simply jammed packed with events of all shapes and sizes!

Dish Buzz: 2009 Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

This past weekend was the seventh annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in Madison Square Park. I thought this was a perfect opportunity to try BBQ offerings from some of the places on my NYC “to try” checklist along with some of the best BBQ from other places throughout the US. There were even two vendors there from my home state of Alabama, Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q and Jim ‘n Nick’s Bar-B-Q.
