A Tripod Quest: In The Midst of Masters

My search for Jonas Bendiksen ended in the nick of time. I was slightly dismayed, as I prepared to leave the Aperture Gallery, which hosted Magnum’s Holiday Book Party. For those of you who may not know, Magnum is the world-famous photo agency whose membership boasts the very best in the field. The whole affair had already served enough of a reality check for me - excited as I was about attending (for free) a Magnum event, I really knew very little about the photographers that were present. I flipped through books by familiar names - Susan Meiselas, Sebastiao Salgado - but most of the photographers and their works were still so foreign to me.

A Tripod Quest: Art and Eats at Vanessa’s

I do not know Edward Cheng, though by now, I feel I should. The both of us are teaching assistants at the International Center of Photography, except he’s been there for years, and I, mere months. My last visit to the photo center, I came across a flyer about a little exhibit Edward was having, documenting Eldridge Street and the surrounding blocks that comprise an area he has affectionately called “Echito” or “east of Chinatown”, where he has spent much of his life. Cheng’s photographic project is currently being held at Vanessa’s Dumpling House, on Eldridge Street, between Grand and Broome Streets.

It would actually strike me as a rather daunting task, say I were to make it my personal mission to hit up every hood NYC had to offer on street art, plus, I’m certain it has already been done.

But, as a newbie to the city, I’ll take what I can get as it comes, and my treks into the city have often led me into East Village’s Alphabet City, where the eats are killer and more importantly, for our purposes, my photographic appetite has always been satisfied.

A Tripod Quest: Walking Willie-style

Hey folks, my name is Miguel de la Fuente, current Bushwick resident, and future vagabonding photojournalist (hopefully). But really, I’m excited for an opportunity to blog about my neighborhood, Brooklyn, and filter it with my own personal photographic lens. Expect some future entries on all things photo, art, Brooklyn, or some wildly imaginative combination of the three. Peace!

On Sunday, the plan was this: participate in a photo-scavenger hunt with a group of photo-junkies like myself in order to scope out the scenic in Brooklyn, upload my pictures along with an assortment of the days’ best captures, and run home to write all about it.

Fighting the Droop: What to Do?

Payless or Prada? That two-day-old pasta surprise or sesame-crusted salmon (yum!) at Café Foo-Foo? Or deli drip versus my double latte? Decisions, decisions…

With Black Friday 2008 looking to be pretty red, kicks and coffee are not the only downgrades being made these days. Now it seems even playtime calls for some creative budgeting. Good thing we live in (one of) the greatest cities in the world, where even your run o’ the mill Barnes and Noble can be a definite hot spot. The key word here is ‘free’ or if you really want to splurge ‘suggested donation’.
