I Am Love
First, I want to give a HUGE congrats to Anthony & his wife! Can’t wait to meet the new baby neighborbee.
And without further adieu, what’s going on in town this week:
Right by my office, the wonderful City Winery is hosting the 2nd Annual Hudson Square Music & Wine Festival. Held in the courtyard behind City Winery, this free concert series runs every Tuesday night till 8/10. Not only is it free but they will also have great wine on hand, which always makes for a great time. The shows begin at 5pm and a perfect head start to a the quintessential happy hour. Last night;s show was great as it featured DeLeon & Jviews. DeLeon is indie rock infused with Spanish flair and Jviews is the multi-genre project of electronic music producer Jonathan Dagan.
The L magazine has also brought back SummerScreen this summer, getting Brooklynites out of their apartments to watch classic movies under the stars. Returning to McCarren Park, SummerScreen promises a great lineup with some cult favorites such as Labyrinth playing this Wednesday. Remember to bring a blanket and enjoy the beer and taco vendors surrounded by a sea of hipsters in plaid and non-prescription glasses. Gates open at 6pm and films start at dusk.
If you are sick of the humidity and sweating through what seems like your third change of clothes, opt for the air conditioned movie theatre. I recently saw Solitary Man and I am Love (Io sono l’amore), back to back, which I haven’t done in ages but nonetheless a gift from the summer Friday gods. Between the two, I am going to give the thumbs up to I am Love, which is a beautiful constructed film with rich and complex characters. Here’s a quick recap without giving away the details: Tilda Swanson, married into the wealthy Recchi family indulges in an affair with her sons’s friend, which leads to devastating conclusions for the family.

Seaport Music Series
WHO: Indie-rockers Bear in Heaven and Zola Jesus
WHAT: The 2010 River To River Festival continues with an indie-rock double bill from the Seaport Music Series
WHEN: Friday, July 9, 6:00 pm
COST: FREE
WHERE: South Street Seaport, Pier 17
WHY: The River To River Festival, New York’s largest free summer arts festival, continues its Seaport Music Series with Bear in Heaven. The Brooklyn-based band, comprised entirely of Southern transplants, crafts psychedelic, minimalist pop tunes out of endless hours of stream-of-conscious musical meandering by members Jon Philpot, Adam Wills, Sadek Bazaraa, and Joe Stickney.
The result has been described as “a powerful, functional mix of This Heat, 70s soft rock, early Genesis, and oddly, later Pink Floyd.” With special guest Zola Jesus.
The concert is part of the Seaport Music Series, which is presented by the River To River Festival, New York’s largest free summer arts festival.
With tall ships as the backdrop, the series continues each Friday, showcasing rising and established indie music stars including Yellow Fever and Woven Bones (July 2), Thee Oh Sees with Golden Triangle and So Cow (July 16),Free Energy and Best Coast with Loose Limbs (July 23), Avi Buffalo and Chad VanGaalen (July 30), and YACHT (August 6).

Me.
This past weekend I sipped strong alcoholic drinks out of teacups in a speakeasy hidden behind a toy shop in the Lower East Side. I also enjoyed a bucket of beer while soaking up the summer sun in the middle of a traffic circle on the Upper West. I walked from my friend’s apartment on 90th Street and Columbus to my apartment at 32nd Street and 2nd, and could tell I was getting close to my neighborhood once every other storefront was a bar or a sushi place. On Father’s Day, I sat with my Dad in the right field seats of Yankee Stadium, predicting Mark Teixeira’s grand slam to beat the New York Mets just moments before it happened.
What’s my point? That I’m a possible alcoholic, probable Murray Hill d-bag who very likely has the ability to predict the future? No. Technically, I live in Kips Bay.
My point is, I live in New York, where random interesting things happen whenever you open your eyes, and I do a lot of things here, which means if you read my articles, you may be inspired to do a lot of things too. I’ve been living here for 10 years, through good times and bad, and have experienced much of the coolness and crap that this city has to offer. I rant and rave a lot. Come experience it with me. Like a humble honeybee, I will buzz around Manhattan isle, pollinating my flower-like readers with allergy-causing observations. Okay, the metaphor doesn’t quite work. And how often do you see a bee in New York? But hey, it’s the name of this blog.
You will not be disappointed. Unless you’re looking for naked pictures of Jamie-Lynn Sigler. I’m keeping those to myself.

Things to do in the city are endless. So it is a bit surprising when I find myself doing the same crap over and over. This week I am going to take my own advice and be adventurous by trying out some of these events.
Sometimes we all need a little intellectual stimulation and what better than a reading presented by Harper’s Magazine at the Housing Works Bookstore Café. Tonight, Harper’s will host “Death: a literary celebration of the bitter end,” a reading featuring selections from the magazine and work by contributors Joseph O’Neill, Diane Williams, and Elif Batuman. With the imminent decline of print media, it might be a good idea to attend these print related events while they still exist. Event starts at 7:00pm.
Another pretty unique event going on this week is hosted by EPIC WIN, the nerdiest burlesque show in town. Friday and Saturday, they will be re-interpreting the classic blockbuster film “GHOSTBUSTERS!,” at The Tank. I volunteer at The Tank, a non-profit art space that supports artists through the means of space and it is a great place to catch off the beaten path shows. They also have refreshments including cheap beer, which you can drink during shows. I mean, how can you beat that? But check out this show this weekend because I can’t imagine what it means to combine Ghostbusters & burlesque but I’m sure it will be entertaining. Think, sexy Halloween. Click here for Presale tickets.
BAMcinemaFEST, also just started and if you love indie film this is a great film festival to take advantage of. It features new films from some of the brightest up-and-coming talents plus cool events. Definitely take advantage of the outdoor screening of SXSW Jury Award winner Tiny Furniture, this Sunday. Also if you are already in the hood to watch a film, Bamcafe is hosting Comedy Night, Friday night at 9:30pm. They will feature a hilarious showcase of local and national comic talents including Sean Patton, Ali wong, and Snakes.Part of BAMcafé Live.

Finally it looks like summer is here and it couldn’t have come a moment sooner. If you are around for the long holiday weekend, while the rest of the city exits in droves, check out some of these hot happenings in town.
A good indication that summer is approaching by my time clock is when the Rooftop Film series starts. So far they have had an amazing line up and this week it only gets better. Tomorrow night Etienne!, a quirky movie about a man and his hamster premieres at Brooklyn Technical High school, which just happens to be in my new hood of Fort Greene. Doors open at 8pm with live music by Natureboy. Friday and Saturday, they will be featuring a series of short films, both of which look great. Not to mention, the after party that will have FREE radeberger pilsner at Fontana’s in the Lower East side.
If you feel like getting a little adventurous and in need of some water action, Good Peoples is throwing an all vinyl disco party on a boat! This monthly boat party takes place Friday, May 28th and can only accommodate 100 people, so get your tickets before they’re gone. Music will be provided by Lloydski and Vin Sol, both great DJ’s who promise a great show featuring some good oldies. Meet at Clipper City, Pier 17 at 9:30 and sets sail at 10. Tickets are $18 and available here.
Last but not least, one of my favorite spots in the summer is the Brooklyn Yard. If you are fortunate enough to have Monday off, come join the party with DJ’s, outdoor views of the heavenly Gowanus canal, food carts, booze, and lots of dancing.

Taking a break from the Twitter world, I figured it was high time I went out and explored some of the new night life and to find some new hot spots. Living in New York for over eight years now, one would think I would have grown to love the Yankees, well don’t count on that happening anytime soon… You see for as long as I can remember I have been a huge Red Sox fan!
