Every year around this time, my friends anxiously await an e-mail that I send around once a year. For a number of years, I’ve compiled a list of all the great summer activities that take place in NYC and send it to the masses with hopes that others will join me on urban adventures.
There are many other summer events lists floating around the Internet right now, but mine includes activities that take places in *gasp* other boroughs than Manhattan.
The list is usually the same from year to year, but one notable exception for 2008 is the absence of the Metropolitan Opera concert in Central Park. Instead, the Met will host one performance in Prospect Park on Friday, June 20.
Be sure to bookmark this page, as I’ll add a few more events as I come across them. And check back for the lists of monthly activities for July, August and September later this summer.
Pull up your calendar and mark down these dates. What a way to kick off summer!

Our Gallery Insider is an anonymous gallery employee, and she’s here to give you the inside scoop on where to go and what (and who) to see each week. After the jump, our Insider opinion on Josephine Meckseper and David Altmejd.

Today’s picks: a star-studded comedy show, a tumblr meetup, and free chicken and waffles with a side of electro party jams.
Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the comedic stylings of Greg Johnson.
Why Greg Johnson? Well, for exactly three years now, Greg’s been holding down Friday nights at Rififi, and he’s celebrating tonight with a blowout anniversary show. A mere sampling of tonight’s lineup: Greg, stand-up legend Todd Barry, The Daily Show’s John Oliver and Best Week Ever’s Nick Kroll. All for a mere $5.
So check out this sampling of Greg’s material, then see you tonight at 8 pm at Rififi (332 E. 11th St, between 1st and 2nd Aves). Can’t make it tonight, so you’d prefer to stalk Greg at some later date in the future? Check out his blog or mayhaps his MySpace page .

Since this weekend is supposed to be crappy and completely unlike the awesome weather of last weekend, we at neighborbee blog thought that we’d offer up something fun (and free!) to do when you’ve emptied your DVR and run out of Rock of Love 2 reruns.
The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Workspace residency program provides studio space and support for a diverse group of selected emerging artists and writers. Starting this Friday and ending on Sunday, LMCC will open its 15,000-square-foot Tribeca studio space to the public during Open Studio Weekend.

Events include fiction and poetry readings, as well as film and video screenings. (For a full schedule, click here .) As we mentioned, all events are free and open to the public, but make sure you RSVP .

First of all, I freaking love Ryan McGinley’s photography. His eye for composition is great, but more importantly, his photos also seem to effortlessly capture an energy and passion that are rarely seen anywhere. If I were the kind of person that no one wanted to talk to at a party I’d say, “he captures what it means to be a free spirit.” Thankfully, I’m incredibly handsome, charming, and wonderfully popular at parties, so I don’t say things like that.
Jen Dziura is a “nerd goddess” comedian who is well known for her Williamsburg Spelling Bee hosted on Mondays at Pete’s Candy Store (note: Editor Kate may have made it to the WSB finals in 2007, and her spelling skills and facial contortions may have appeared on YouTube).
For those who think that physical activity is scary (but also have a serious competitive streak), Dziura has yet another offering (this time, in Manhattan): Chelsea Mind Games.
Taking place this Wednesday at Chelsea Market, Chelsea Mind Games features “articulate music” by Al Duvall, a Vocabulary Tournament, and an interview with Dr. Sketchy founder Molly Crabapple, which features a lesson on how to draw the female form (live model included!). Prizes, refreshment, and booze are also available.
Chelsea Mind Games: Chelsea Market, 6:30-10 pm, 4/23
