The only thing better than a New York based band is a band consisting of members from other New York based bands. My Happy Gun represents the fusion of sounds and stylistic components from various subgenres of rock music.
My sincerest apologies everyone, I know its been awhile since you’ve seen a new Sweet Beat entry. Unfortunately I’ve been experiencing some rough times, but luckily music helped me get through it. We’re officially in the holiday season and Christmas is around the corner. During the month of December families get together to sing carols and listen to their favorite Christmas songs. If you want to add a little twist to your holiday tradition, here’s a few concerts worth checking out this week.
Are you tired of the same five songs playing on your radio? Are you looking for something original and possibly your new favorite band? If that’s the case, I have the place for you. The Cake Shop is the ultimate hot spot for Indie music and is definitely one of the places you need to be on the weekend. Located at 152 Ludlow Street, this little shop is not only a place to check out live music, it’s also a cafe!
As many of you know there wasn’t a new installment of “The Sweet Beat” last week. I want to apologize for that. I was battling the flu which ended up triggering my asthma, so needless to say I spent most of my time in bed.
Like a true New Yorker, I didn’t let my illness slow me down (too much). Although I was stuck at home, I was living through my speakers. I swear, no matter how bad you feel you can always count on music to make you feel better (you should also take medicine, of course). Read more »
One word… wow! If you didn’t attend The Roots and Gym Class Heroes concert last Tuesday, you truly missed out. Last Tuesday around 5:30pm I waited on a line outside Roseland Ballroom anticipating one hell of a show. It was cold and rainy, but no one seemed to be bothered as they reminisced about their favorite concert moments and hummed the melodies of their favorite songs. I can’t lie, I was one of those people!
Over the weekend I decided to dive into my Hip-Hop collection and relive the classics. From Biz Markie to A Tribe Called Quest; all the legendary New York emcees were present in my apartment. There’s no doubt the music scene here in New York is one of the most eclectic in the world, but are we aware of that In today’s times we take that for granted, especially when it comes to Hip-Hop.
It seems that we’ve forgotten that we live in the birthplace of Hip-Hop and are known across the world for having some of the greatest emcees. I can’t say that I’m surprised considering the majority of the Hip-Hop music getting radio play seems generic, repetitive, and bad!
My Zune ran out of battery a few days ago and I didn’t have time to charge it. Needless to say I felt incomplete without it, so once I finally had time to charge my battery I searched the web to see what concerts were going on this week in case a similar situation occurred. To my surprise there were a few promising concerts this upcoming weekend. Now the real question is, which one’s for you? The beauty of rock music today is that it’s filled with so many unique subgenres. Instead of listening to the same song you heard on the radio, go out and expand your musical horizon. A few of the shows going on this week that I recommend are:
Life in New York City can be hectic and draining, we all know this. Sometimes you need to kick back and relax while listening to your favorite track and munching on something that seems too good to be true. My name is Carlos J. and I’m a typical city slicker who’s passion in life is listening to good music and tasting a plethora of desserts. I explore the streets to find the sweeter side of New York and let you know which desserts are worth getting your hands sticky over. Once you get cleaned up, I’ll keep you up to date with concerts and music events I think are worth checking out.
