Gallery Insider: CheLESea

Gallery Insider is back! Having been on vacation for the past few weeks, she’s full of advice for gallery hoppers– although not for this week. This week’s a slow week in gallery land, so the openings are set for next Saturday, 6/14.

For the very ambitious, there are two different directions—Chelsea and the Lower East Side—to head in for making the rounds of the evening’s openings. For the more conservative, choosing one should keep your hands full while putting you in the vicinity of plenty of good bars and restaurants to hit up as you continue your evening.

If you feel like Chelsea, go straight for 22nd Street, where side-by-side 303 Gallery and Andrew Kreps Gallery will be having interesting, if challenging, openings.

Jane & Louise Wilson
“The Silence is Twice as Fast Backwards”
303 Gallery, 525 West 22nd Street, 6-8 pm

In their new show these British twin sisters further their exploration of subliminal experience with a new sound installation and photographic works. With ethereal images and bewildering sound manipulations. Definitely go to this show with an open mind—if you do, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing alternate reality.

“Standard Sizes”
Curated by Joao Ribas
Andrew Kreps Gallery, 525 West 22nd Street

including: Ricci Albenda, Kjell Bjorgeengen, Kerstin Brätsch, Martin Creed, Liz Deschenes, Morgan Fischer, Rachel Harrison, Imi Knoebel, Camilla Low, Allan McCollum, Brian O’Connell, Blinky Palermo, Richard Pettibone, Josh Smith, Matt Sheridan Smith, and Sturtevant

Rather than looking at works of art as the product of a unique individual—giving the utmost value to the idea of the artistic “self”—the pieces in this show are created from systems and build meaning through the use of standardized forms. While the premise might be hefty, the impeccable list of artists and the gallery’s track record as an undeniable arbiter of that which is cool and worthwhile should equate to a fun opening and an interesting show. The show’s organizer, João Ribas, is curator at The Drawing Center, (an institution which has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance this past year and is worth checking out) and over the past few years has curated thought provoking shows at galleries and institutions across the city.

LOWER EAST SIDE

Sarah Braman
“Love Songs”
Museum 52, 95 Rivington Street, 6-8 pm

Sarah Braman’s work brings together awkward assemblages of human-made materials—to someone from outside the art world they might look like heaps of junk, but if you pay attention to the individuality of the materials, their texture, and weight, you might start to understand that elusive art world idea of the “ready made” and why it’s so important. After all, when was the last time you looked at sheets of linoleum as something precious or artistic? Museum 52 is the New York outpost of what started as a hip London space, and they always attract a fun crowd. Their prime LES location makes it a good jumping off point for a little bar hopping or quick bite to eat after perusing the opening.

PRESSPRESS at RENTAL Gallery
120 East Broadway, 6th Floor, 7-9 pm

The first large-scale exhibition of works published by PRESSPRESS, a producer of limited edition artist prints. The show will include prints by Edgar Arcenaux, Thomas Zipp, Aaron Young, Walead Beshty, Spencer Sweeney, Delia Brown (currently has a solo show at D’Amelio Terras), and many more. Given the hip LES location and large number of artists included in this show, this should be a good party—like Museum 52, something good to swing by as you start off a night of cultured debauchery.
