Brooklyn Sting- 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Brooklyn |

I’m on vacation in South America for the next few weeks, so rather than just leave you without your weekly Brooklyn Sting, I thought I’d put together some quick facts to give you more background on Brooklyn and make you a hit at the next Brooklyn Historical Society* party. After the jump, Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Brooklyn.
*Note: I cannot confirm if the Brooklyn Historical Society even has parties.
1) Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City’s five boroughs – just try finding a place on the F train when you’re at the last stop in Brooklyn!
2) Kings County (which contains Brooklyn) is the 7th largest county in the United States
3) More people lived in Brooklyn in 1950 than do today (2.7 million in 1950 vs. 2.5 million in 2006)
4) Community Board 18, comprised of Canarsie and Flatlands, has the highest population of all the neighborhoods in Brooklyn (194,000+ people)
4) 37.8% of Brooklynites were born in a foreign country
5) Brooklynites represent 93 different ethnic groups, 150 nationalities, and speak 136 different languages
6) 53% of Brooklyn residents are female – good luck finding a date here, ladies
7) Of the 38,732 businesses with paid employees in Brooklyn, 37% of those are minority owned and 26% are owned by women
With a median income of $29,961, an estimated 24% of Brooklynites live in poverty. Only the Bronx has a higher percentage (27%). Staten Island has the lowest (9%)
9) 62.9% of Brooklynites have been living in the same house or apartment for the last five years (including me!)
10) Brooklyn residents spend an average of 43 minutes commuting to work each day
