Art Colony: Art Round Up 3

It’s scheduled to be another big week for New York art. It’s also scheduled to be another big week for romance, smoochin’ and lovin’ you down, girl. So get on your party hats, put on your dancing shoes, and then take them both off, because you’re going to some art exhibits. Honestly, why would you put on dancing shoes and party hats to go to an art gallery? I can’t take you anywhere. Sometimes I don’t even know why I try.

Robin Rhode

Robin Rhode has an exhibition at the Perry Rubenstein Gallery opening up right now with some really great stuff. It’s part grafitti, part perspective art, part photography. Plus there are some sculptures and video installations. If I didn’t know better I’d say Robin Rhode is considerable talented. If I also didn’t know better I’d say that having annoymous sex with hundreds of good looking partners a week might not be healthy. Thank fully, I don’t know better.

Poster Child

This is a video of Poster Child hanging art installations on the streets of New York. He makes stained glass cutouts of words and then hangs them over the video display ads on subways. The video makes it look really great. Sort of the way a speedo makes me look. He’s basically hanging pictures of me wearing a speedo. Too bad for him, the real deal is even more real than you could imagine.

The New York City Waterfalls

I’d be remiss to not mention the fact that Olafur Eliason’s “Waterfalls” exhibition starts this week. Starting on Thursday, they’ll turn on his mysterious and dramatic waterfall sculptures around the city. There are four locations where they’ll occur, Pier 35 in Manhattan, Govenor’s Island, The Brooklyn Bridge, and the Brooklyn Pier. This is going to be a huge installation and will certainly be under the “don’t miss it” distinction, up there with The Gates and You Don’t Mess With The Zohan .

Walter Martin and Paloma Munoz

A friend of mine sent this on to me yesterday and I nearly missed it completely. Lucky for you the Art God’s smile on me. They’re snow globes and other whimsical pieces with really surreal and dark scenes inside. They don’t have an exhibition open right now, but coming up in July there will be. In the meantime, go through their website. It’s really enjoyable.
