The Sweet Beat: Weekend Warriors

I’m really excited about this upcoming weekend! During the end of the spring semester my student government organizes a music concert a few weeks before we start to break down during finals.

It’s that time of year again and Hunter College proudly welcomes Nas.

Friday Night In: Bustin Down The Door

First off, I know what you’re thinking… it’s May 1st. Marketing campaigns reach all of us. But why spend perfectly good just-earned-salary-check money  on seeing Wolverine on opening weekend when you can wait ’til Discount Tuesday (less crowded and no pre-teens kicking the back of your chair repeatedly while screaming asinine comments for 2 hours straight) and in the mean time rent the flick below? Just a really good thought.

Queens Bee: Irish Bar Hopping In Sunnyside / Woodside

guinness_4.30.09

Sunnyside and Woodside, Queens are amazing places in which to live (and work and play and, uh… drink) due in no small part to the many, many cultures represented in these neighborhoods. Among these are the Irish, as evidenced by the plethora of Irish bars and pubs to be found in this area of Queens. Read more »

Theatre Buzz: Pretty Theft Gives Stealing a Good Name

Five Finger Discount

Five Finger Discount

I’ve never been involved in a bank heist but if I were, I could never be tasked with the role of Getaway Driver.  I can’t navigate with any certainty when the car is required to do above 30 mph on a city street.  Ask me to drive at break-neck speed through urban obstacles and then set you down at the end safely and I assure you: I can’t do it.  But Adam Szymkowicz can … and in his new play Pretty Theft directed by Angela Astle he shows us how he navigates those narrow streets and dark alleys like a pro.  In the hands of a lesser writer (or the wrong director) I could see this play crashing into a wall and laying in a twisted heap of shards and confusion.  But it doesn’t, it gets it right every time, and that’s what makes Pretty Theft so appealing.

Dish Buzz: Braai

Braai, Hells Kitchen

Braai, Hell's Kitchen

Braai popped up over the past few weeks as a good spot for brunch in Hell’s Kitchen. I was intrigued after reading the menu. Initially a little confused about when they served brunch (I read somewhere that they only served brunch on Sundays but OpenTable allowed me to make a reservation for Saturday.), after a quick call to the restaurant I learned that they just started serving brunch on Saturdays, this past Saturday being the first. Naturally, I was more than happy to help support them in this expansion.

Scones, Braai

Scones, Braai

Braai is an African restaurant. Their brunch offerings ranged from $8-$14 and ranged from the more standard fare of French toast (or “Hugenot Toast”) to the more exotic, such as their Ostrich Benedict. Before your main course comes out, they bring you a plate of small fresh scones containing some sort of currants. They are served with fresh butter and apricot preserves. Following that we received a small bowl of African porridge which is very similar to grits with a thin layer of sugar (just how I love them!).

Hugenot Toast with Rooibos Syrup, Braai

Hugenot Toast with Rooibos Syrup, Braai

I went with their french toast served with a rooibos (redbush) syrup. It had a sweet taste with a bit of tang to it. It’s hard to compare but I’d say something akin to cranberries as a frame of reference. My only complaint with my french toast would be that there was more roobias syrup; It was so distinctive that I wanted to taste more of its flavor.

Safrikan Brekkie

Safrikan Brekkie, Braai

My friends both went with the Safrikan Brekkie. The dish had many elements: boerewors (a fresh lamb sausage), eggs, fried tomato, grilled onions, baked beans, and toast. They were sold at lamb sausage. Both said it was really flavorful and definitely filling.

A nice beverage option available are their mimosas. For an additional $8 per person, you can have unlimited passion fruit mimosas. The mimosas are served with passion fruit, champagne and orange puree. If you’re lucky they will run out of the passion fruit and allow you try other purees not on their menu. We had the opportunity to try their pear mimosa (my favorite) as well as their guava. Excellent service and great value for your money. And with temperatures on the rise, you can also take advantage of their limited outdoor seating.

As a wine bar they also offer fantastic happy hour specials that includes an interesting array of reasonably priced appetizers. We will be back soon to check those out.

The Death of Print As We Know It

ripThe recession has not only brought about job losses but the loss of the print industry as we know it. I must say that I have always been a fan of the print industry - that is where I first started in advertising. The perks were amazing and the cut-throat environment was exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. The old goons who ran it knew their shit but at the end of the day, the internet came stealing its thunder with cheap rates and measurable data.

I have been following the trend of newspapers and magazines going down the drain and I think it’s about time we bid them a Rest in Peace.

Theatre Buzz: “The Oath” Will Have You Testifying

Take The Oath

Take The Oath

Take a preacher looking for a flock, a flock looking for a preacher, one “Good” sister, one “Bad” sister, a snooty churchwoman trying to bring down a house of cards and a housekeeper who’d give Alice a run for her money, set it all in the dry, hot Dust Bowl of Depression-Era Florida and you’ve only just begun to scratch the surface of Jacqueline Goldfinger’s magnificent The Oath, directed by Cristina Alicea and currently running at The Arclight Theater till May 10th.

Before the play even starts, sound designer Martha Goode and scenic designer Blair Mielnik do an amazing job of settling you into the time period as well as the underlying good ole Christian spirit by playing songs like I’ll Fly Away while you get to study the beautifully detailed and marvelously evocative set design which gets it perfect, right down to the old icebox and wooden framed forced perspective hallway.

Gay Life - The Paulinator: Missed Connection Whore

With the temperature rising in the Big Apple, I like to think that it also leads to most people’s attractiveness rising as well. I left my office last Friday to go for an afternoon stroll and to see everyone looking fierce and cute in the neighborhood was simply delightful. It was a welcome change from the bundled up messes that most people become during the bitter winter months.

Friday night I decided to head out and meet up with some friends in lower Manhattan. I hardly ever venture down in that area anymore so it was good to revisit some of old stomping grounds. On my way, looking fabulous in a blazer, striped shirt, jeans and flip flops, I noticed a guy standing on the platform waiting for the subway. We immediately caught each others gaze and he entered the car I was standing in. He took a seat across the way from me and stared a little more than normal at me. We would catch each others glances every so often and, to be blunt, was kind of arousing.
