Holding Hans with Brian Hansbury: Proposing

Dear Hans,

I plan on proposing to my girlfriend in the next couple weeks. Have any good ideas?

Signed,

Pre-Nuptial In Prospect Heights

Wow, Pre-Nup, the fact that you are asking a Q-list Internet dating writer to give you ideas about something so personal does not inspire confidence in your creative/romantic abilities. You remind me of every close-minded dude from Bensonhurst I’ve ever met. Ya know, the type of guy who inserts casual racism into a conversation before even feeling out the crowd. The type of guy who actually refers to the ridiculous glamour shots hanging on the wall of Italian barber shops as a guideline for his haircut. The type of guy who speaks only in crass, quasi-religious assertions.

NY Media Swarm: Hello, Twitter!

Hello my fellow neighborbee’s!  I am excited to introduce you to my new column the NY Media Swarm.  My goal is to help you bee in the know while focusing on the media swarm that is New York. Working in the media industry for the last several years has made me a culture fiend and inclined to all things media. So get ready for highlights, scoops, and gossip on what’s going on in the media world. Since media is so intertwined with culture, I will at times also feature notable music, art, and food events throughout the city.  Hope you enjoy!

Fighting the Droop: During National Poetry Month

sunset1Now, I’ve done my share of creative writing workshops, but the one gathering that will always kick my butt is the poetry workshop. To this day, I’ve only done one - for credit in my grad classes - and the only thing I have to show for it is an overwrought collection of couplets about my dead relatives (My instructor’s words, not mine).

Now, I’m a pretty punchy bee, but there’s something about poetry - the poem with a capital ‘P’- that is terrifying. 1) If done well, it’s extremely raw; 2) there are no characters to really hide behind; and 3) yes, that rock on the beach is plainly a metaphor for your lover’s body.

In other words, I’m left naked and a little chilly…

Gay Life - The Paulinator: More than Boys…

GLAAD Media

Flashback to the days when I was in the closet,  life was focused on one thing, my career. I thought if I could keep this my number one priority in life, then I would not have to think about the other scary realities. So when I was asked about relationships or if I was dating anyone, it was easy to brush it off and say, “I’m really trying to focus on my career right now.” Now it seems all I focus on are boys, which is not such a horrible thing but can’t I focus on both a career and finding someone to “If you seek Amy?Read more »

New York City Restaurants - Dish Buzz: Pylos

Pylos, East Village

Pylos, East Village

My mother’s lone request on her visit to NYC last week was pasticcio at a Greek restaurant. I didn’t have a go to spot for Greek. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever had Greek. I know the “best” Greek is in Queens, a statement I plan to validate in warmer weather, but decided to try Pylos.

Located in the East Village just south of Saint Mark’s Place, Pylos describes itself as “rustic Greek home cooking”. A friend had highly recommended. I called at the last minute and was able to get a reservation for 7pm. Otherwise, they only had 9 available. And this was on a Tuesday night.

New York City Theater Scene - Theatre Buzz: Make A Stop At This Bus Stop

Alisha Spielmann, John Blaylock, and Rebecca Dealy / Photo by Bella Muccari.

William Inge’s classic Bus Stop was written in the mid-fifties and at The Gallery Players’ production everything right down to set designer Edward Morris’ bread box and costume designer Meredith Neal’s use of horn-rimmed glasses reflect that awww-shucks time period.  But even if director Heather Siobhan Curran had decided to take a little creative license and move the whole thing up to 2009, the plot wouldn’t allow it … for one very simple reason.  In the middle of the night when a bus must pull into a roadside diner due to bad weather, instead of people sitting off to the side, watching Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog on hulu.com, checking their emailing from their Android, updating their FaceBook profiles, Twittering about how boring it is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, or even just (yawn) listening to their iPod, they actually talk to each other.  Sooooooo last century.

The last time I had all the time in the world to tell my life story in a no-distractions-allowed environment was when I was on a jury back in 1992; after 3 weeks I knew all about how Con Edison worked, the entire contents of a bachelor’s refrigerator, heard Vietnam War stories from a vet, and discussed the Torah with a rabbinical student. These were fascinating stories; but they came out slowly and over the course of weeks. The characters of Bus Stop just have the one night …

Dating in New York City - Holding Hans with Brian Hansbury: Fever

Dear Hans,

Why do so many white guys date Asian girls?

Signed,
Egg in the East Village

First, Egg, I’d suggest reading this website where a white guy tries really hard to seem like he’s not looking down his nose at Asian guys while totally in the process of looking down his nose at Asian guys. He espouses all kinds of opinions you can choose to agree with or not. Then I’d read this newspaper article from the early 1990s that seems remarkably relevant today.

Warning: The following is peppered with gross generalization.

Gay Life - The Paulinator: Crushed by the Crush

bartender

You know that feeling that you have, the one in the pit of your stomach, when someone catches your eye and you are almost instantly attracted to this person. We’ve all been there, we’ve all had those school-girl type crushes, heck, I live for those school-girl crushes. It’s the pursuit of the crush that brings about all the questions, “Does he like me the same way? Or should we just be friends?”, “He’s so pretty, what if he’s bad in bed?”

Well, my three month pursuit of Hot Bartender finally ended this past weekend. I would say, “I should have seen the signs coming,” but not only was I blindsided, so were my Sex and the City-esque gal pals.
