All Things New York - Concierge Corner: Marissa, at your service

Ahh, the frost on the railing to your brownstone signals colder days are ahead. As we approach the New Year, you may want to start coming out of your shell a little, and start having fun. What kind of fun, you ask? Well there are all different types. Here, in the Concierge Corner, you will find the newest bar that has opened and scandalously taunting wine-affairs, with everything in between.

As we celebrate the last of 2008, and prepare for our welcomed change-of-pace (aka Obama), feel free to comment and let me know of the activities and feats you want to accomplish and I will be sure to provide you with those tools.

Your lifestyle guru,

Marissa

The Week(end) Ahead:

Raising the ‘Bar’: Ever get dressed to go out, then you get somewhere and despise your oufit? Wish you had something more hip in your wardrobe? Maybe after a couple of drinks, you will forget about it. Or maybe you will be just buzzed enough to call over the in-house seamstress to measure you for a custom suit. Get another beer from the Singer sewing-machine beer tap and you are ready to go. No joke - it’s high fashion in lower Manhattan, with a twist, of lemon. Enjoy the laid back scene and funky elements at Elsa, 217 E 3rd St (between B/C). For more info, call: 917.882.7395.

What a Night: Celebrate Manhattan’s beautiful waterfront, alongside the Hudson River Park team. A wonderful Holiday Celebration to get you in the mood featuring live Jazz by a sultry singer, who croons with the best of ‘em. A cup of coffee so good, you will be buying it by the pound as Holiday presents, Stone Crabs served up by a Sustainable Fishing Group to go with your Organic Wine. The Friends of Hudson River Park are throwing the bash with Green Spaces. For those not in-the-know, Green Spaces serves as a home to a community of Green Entrepreneurs in NYC. Be sure to check out their site to follow all of the amazing and innovative initiatives they will be taking as we move into 2009. Next Thursday, December 11th from 7 - 9pm, make your way down to the Chelsea Art Museum.

Rockin Restaurants: Even though nothing about me is classic, I like classic restaurants. Using marble and striped wallpaper, L’Artusi is now open, and totally speaks to my heart. Serving up some good ol’ Italian comfort food, we eyeball a more upscale, Italian-flavored pub-crawl. We get this gem from the guys who blessed us with Dell’ Anima. With an expansive Tap menu, raw bar and eclectic plates - this restaurant is sure to be a quick hit. Check out the menu before you go, but before you go - make a rezzy. The heavy-Italian wine menu with more than 600 bottles will have you forgetting what the first three plates you ordered were, and get you in the mood for their Tripe Bruschetta with Tuscan Chickpeas. 228 W. 10th St (between Bleecker & Hudson). Be sure to call ahead: 212.255.5757.

Wile Wine Events: What could be more tempting than wine, chocolate, and - sex. In Good Company Workplaces presents Sex, Wine & Chocolate: Do You Want a Taste of the Real Thing? A certified Wine Educator and expert - Tracy Ellen Kamens takes you through the wines. This Ivy educated, award-winning (Wine & Spirits Magazine) speaker will be paired up with Judith Steinhart, Certified Sexuality Educator and expert. She teaches couples and individuals how to expand their knowledge of sexuality, deepen their communication skills and increase pleasure and empowerment. With a podcast on Health and taking over for famed, Dr. Ruth…you literally can’t go wrong. Taking place on Dec 10, this Wednesday from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM. The price is what else, but $69, and it includes all of the above, well - the sex is up to you. 16 West 23rd Street, 4th floor - Chelsea. Call 646.810.9195 for more details and to RSVP.

Cool Culture: It’s that time of year where you are thinking about clothes fitting tighter, how many glasses of Cab you had last night, and wishing you had a workout routine in place for the New Year. Well, we have great news. Without ruining your steez for the Holidays, or packing up your schedule too much, try Yoga. In a new ec-studio at Pure Yoga. They serve you up some of the best body-bending, sweat-inducing, Bollywood fusion classes a week - over 100 of them! Taunt your twists with over 19 styles of yoga. Ignore those sweaty gyms you pass by as you look into the empty eyes of the Treadmill lovers. Move on to - panels and 100% organic sofas for an hour or so. 203 E. 86th St., UES. For more info call - 212.360.1888. You can even get unlimited classes for only $140.

A La Mode: Since when is it not a good time to attend an all-night dinner party? My favorite aspect of alternative-dining settings is that you are choosing to be around a certain group of people, unlike in restaurants. Albeit, not everyone is cut from the same cloth - but that is exactly the allure. Well, that and the fact that you will be served a 24-course meal and partake in a hands-on demo. Did I mention there were pairings? A Razor, a Shiny Knife presents: Breaking Bread & Boundaries. With only 30 seats, this event, taking place on next Friday Dec. 12th and Sat. Dec 13th calls for a definite reservation. Book it now! Email with the subject line: “I want 24-courses” to this email!. Location is undisclosed until you have RSVP’d.

Bee Here: Get your Holiday Shop on!! Check out my 2008 Holiday Shopping & Gift Guide which we posted today. Because you are such a devoted and loyal fan of your Concierge, I wanted to give you a heads-up about a wonderful, shopping extravaganza. Holiday Shopping + Cocktails at the Garden. This Wednesday, December 10th, from 6 - 8pm …find yourself on a Metro-North train headed to the Botanical Gardens. This free event offers complimentary glasses of wine as you shop for distinctive and delightful gifts. Make sure you RSVP by calling here - 718.817.8869 and get the 10% discount! Get to The Garden, by taking the Harlem Line (it’s only 20 minutes) to the Botanical Garden Station. Hop on the 5:37 or 6:02 pm, right after work.
