Concierge Corner: Get out in the cold, and bee cool

Good day! I hope you have all recovered from your tryptophan trip. As you know here at Neighborbee, we are concerned about your social-condition and would never leave you for a weekend without a to-do list. So get out there in the cold and get cool with some of the happenings going on below. We have everything from a pop-up boutique on the Lower East Side to a vegetarian restaurant with eats so good, Turkey will be a thing of the past. Well, maybe not that drastic, but you get my point.

Next week is full of holiday-goodness with cooking classes, wine shin-digs and theatre-happenings. Bee sure to tune in to your favorite Concierge corner. It’s where Cool St. and Hot Ave. meet.

Misha has been described as “musically delicious“, which is exactly what they are. Not only is their music beautiful - some of their songs (Weatherbee Acoustics) have that perfect edge for Fall - but John and Ashley are such beautiful humble souls, too.

Name: Ashley Yao and John Chao

Dish Buzz: Bloomingdale Road

Bloomingdale Road

I’ve wanted to visit Bloomingdale Road since reading about the concept months back, but I wanted to give them a few months to settle in. Reviews I’d been reading were all over the place, but I finally decided forget all of their opinions. I was off to make my own.

A mixture of small plates and bites, salads, sliders, pastas, and main meat courses, the menu has a subtle upscale Southern flare and makes use of all natural meats and organic local produce and dairy as much as possible. The music featured classic rock, from “Sweet Home Alabama” to Aerosmith. When I saw the dinner menu had a side dish of cheese grits, I couldn’t help but wonder how this place could not be good.

The Sweet Beat: Hipster’s Paradise

Are you tired of the same five songs playing on your radio? Are you looking for something original and possibly your new favorite band? If that’s the case, I have the place for you. The Cake Shop is the ultimate hot spot for Indie music and is definitely one of the places you need to be on the weekend. Located at 152 Ludlow Street, this little shop is not only a place to check out live music, it’s also a cafe!

Holding Hans with Brian Hansbury: Psycho Stalker 101

Q:  I’ve recently been dealing with a psycho stalker.  He and I dated only a couple of times, but the guy won’t leave me alone.  He calls and texts me at least ten times a day and sometimes I see him loitering outside my apartment.  I don’t feel safe.  What should I do?

Signed,
House Arrested In Harlem

A:  Call the police.  If the actions of a stalker ever make you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, every necessary step should be taken to remove that person from your life.  Restraining orders may seem like a slap on the wrist, but they serve to tell a stalker you mean business.  Some guys don’t get it.  They think if you talk to them in any way, even if it is to say, “You are a loser and I want you to stop,” then you must still be interested.  Restraining orders are a major hassle to get put in place, but they are a critical shot over the bow in your war on creepiness.  Since, unfortunately, you can’t kill the guy (though, I’m not looking) all you can do is hope something else comes up in his miserable life to distract him.

Bee Thrifty: The Impending National… Holiday!

Hello friends. It is a rainy Tuesday before Thanksgiving and we are probably all thinking about how many outfits we need to bring to our parents, and whether it is better to wear the red sweater to dinner or the blue one. Well, at least that is what I am thinking about.

So, is everyone getting ready for Capitalism’s biggest holiday? Black Friday?

All the newscasters can talk about is what will happen on Black Friday? Will the fate of the American economy be determined Friday? Will the shopper see his shadow or will we have six more months of recession? Wait, oh, that’s a different holiday.

I propose we change our national flag to the following:

Bee Reel: ‘Next Stop, Greenwich Village’

While it’s no masterpiece, it’s certainly a cozy, Sunday movie.  And since it’s a cozy Sunday, it felt appropriate to pay homage to this New York classic, which pays homage to classic New York.

Brooklyn Sting: Transit Museum Shenanigans

On yet another chilly afternoon, I ventured to the New York Transit Museum for my weekly dose of culture. The green globe at the corner of Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street marks the subterranean entrance to the museum, housed in the now-defunct Court Street station.

Our first stop on the Transit Museum tour was Steel, Stone & Backbone: Building New York’s Subways 1900-1925. My friend and I marveled at images of the old City Hall station. With arches and intricate tile work, why can’t all our subway stations be that beautiful? (Maybe because the MTA has that pesky little budget shortage.) After perusing displays about Robert Moses, the evolution of rider currency, and the newly-renamed Triborough Bridge, we were ready to move to the hands-on exhibits.
