Every other Friday, you will get tips, information, events, lectures and other gems on how to get even more zen. It’s so important in a capacious city like ours, to keep your scene serene.

In a city of millions of people, you can easily get caught up in the working from 9-5, then heading to happy hour from 5-9 scene. Dating, shopping and thinking about who to date and where to shop takes up the rest of your spare time. Take a step back guys. Make your New Year’s resolutions happen before the first of the year and start TODAY. Maintain a sense of self as you sashay down the city steets in your designer garb, bouncing your head to the tunes in your IPOD.

Concierge Corner: Marissa is here

We meet again. In the city that never sleeps, I hope you are getting some now since we are running into the busy-season for NY’s holiday bashes.  There is so much going on in the vein of restaurants opening and lounges hosting soft-openings…so keep posted for next week. Thank you for the comments from the last post, and to address Ara’s question about an Upper West Side wine bar - here are my recommendations:

Bee Reel: The Pioneer Theater’s Current Festival will “Schlock” You

From horror classics like Night of the Living Dead and Blood Sucking Freaks to occult flicks such as Goth Kill to documentaries on the “Gill-Man ,” Schlocktober at the Pioneer Theater has something for everyone this Halloween.

If you’ve never been to this adorable movie house, it’s kind of like if your cool, stoner friend came into his inheritance and built a movie theater. It’s modest but pristine, equipped with tons of snacks though they’re totally laid back about guests bringing stuff in from the deli across the street, every screening starts about 10 minutes late, they turn a blind eye to pot-smoking during the show and it’s likely the filmmaker and/or the stars will turn up during the credits for an extremely informal Q&A.

Family Days: Halloween Events in NYC

pumpkins in a patch

Halloween has been my favorite holiday for as long as I can remember. There is just something refreshing about haunted hayrides, maize mazes, and swapping Candy corn for Snickers….or at least attempting to. No one else wanted their candy corn either. There are so many ghoulish festivities going on in the city–and the suburbs–how can you possibly keep track? Here’s a list to get you started.

Beeline Interviews: Not Eating Out In NY’s Cathy Erway

Cathy’s food blog is one of those blogs where I bookmark recipes and find inspiration. Beyond her recipes, I visit her blog often to discover local food events (Pig butchering class anyone? Yes, I am one girl who is down!), or learn about foraging food tours in NYC parks (It’s completely safe, edible, and likely delicious!), or just get some gumption to cook a few more meals a week versus taking the lazy and often dissatisfying take-out route.

Name: Cathy Erway
Occupation: Freelance copywriter and sometimes journalist
Borough/Neighborhood: Brooklyn/Crown Heights

Tell us a little about your blog, Not Eating Out In NY (NEOINY), and the upcoming book you’re working on: It’s the true story of one woman’s struggle to not eat out in the city that never eats in! Or something like that. But to get all deep about it, when I began the blog two years ago, I was inspired by a “media fast” that a professor in college made our class go on, who was inspired by Thoreau’s wilderness retreat in Walden. The book will be a memoir about my experience rather than short snippets and recipes as seen on the blog.

The Sweet Beat: Music Crisis Solved

My Zune ran out of battery a few days ago and I didn’t have time to charge it. Needless to say I felt incomplete without it, so once I finally had time to charge my battery I searched the web to see what concerts were going on this week in case a similar situation occurred. To my surprise there were a few promising concerts this upcoming weekend. Now the real question is, which one’s for you? The beauty of rock music today is that it’s filled with so many unique subgenres. Instead of listening to the same song you heard on the radio, go out and expand your musical horizon. A few of the shows going on this week that I recommend are:

Dish Buzz: The Treats Truck - Bringing ‘Sugar’ to Wall Street

The Treats TruckFresh off of their win for Best Dessert Vendor for this year’s Vendy Awards, the Treats Truck was out in full force this Monday afternoon on Wall Street. It took a little time to track down Sugar’s (their truck) location, but finally she was found at the corner of Maiden Lane and Pearl Street.

This outing marks the second time they have ventured to the far South reaches of Manhattan. There’s reason to hope for more such occassions, as Kim (their website labels her the ”owner/baker/driver/eater” for the Treats Truck) stated they will be trying to make the Monday stop on Wall Street a regular part of the schedule. Holding Hans with Brian Hansbury: Bros Before Hos?

Q: My boyfriend just moved to LA for six months. Already two of his best friends, guys he’s known forever, have asked me out on dates. Do I tell my boyfriend and ruin his friendships?

A: Your boyfriend’s friends seem like d-bags of the highest order. What really bugs me about your situation is that these guys think they could get away with something so preposterous and audacious. Is your boyfriend best friends with Karl Rove and Dick Cheney?

I’ve always subscribed to bro’s before ho’s and I view this situation in the same way. Your boyfriend is your bro. He gives you noogies, farts in your face and bangs you. Some days you hate him, others days you love him and don’t know what you’d do without his support or his fake ID. Your man’s friends are no good man whores. A guy wants to believe he can trust his friends to protect his girlfriend while he’s away, not try to enter her. Even if he knows his friends are d-bags, he at least expects them to respect his relationship. If they can’t even do that it may be time to find some new friends. So, yes, you should tell your boyfriend.

After all, you’re not worried about being friends with these idiots after the smoke clears. They were your man’s stupid friends in the first place. Think of this as an awesome opportunity to further control your boyfriend’s life and force him to spend more time with you. You go, girl.
