Let the Right One In

Heave all of your preconceptions about vampire films out the window because Let the Right One In will undoubtedly exceed expectations or rather, scare them away.  Based on the popular Swedish novel by John Ajvide Lingqvist, who also penned the screenplay, this is magical realism/horror at its apex, and the undead have never been so full of soul.

Happy Spooky Day folks. If you are one of those people I saw dressed up in a costume this morning on the A train, then God Bless you. I am sure your company is having a costume party today, and there is a big pot involved, but lets just say you have more chutzpah than I. Now, if you are dressed like a burrito then you would simply be my hero. Once a year Chipotle gives away free food. Well, not just food but burritos. And they are only giving it away to Burritos. So get your tortilla gear on, find a substitute for sour cream and guacamole. Then ask yourself if it’s worth walking through the city, or even worse, around work for a $5 burrito. Some will say yes. I, however, will opt out of the walking-flour-fold myself. Find the nearest Chipotle by plugging in your zip code here.

If that isn’t really in your stars, then have a read below. And please get back to me on how many Sarah Palin outfits you see today. Have a great week!

I liked Stray Vintage immediately. I was so happy when they opened in the neighborhood. They’re a happy combination of vintage, new, and neighborhood-local. I love taking leisurely strolls down Skillman and wandering into Stray to check out bags and trinkets. (And usually end up crushing on a piece of furniture that I sadly don’t have room for.) It’s one of those places I’d like to keep a secret, but Dan & Tara are just so awesomely down to earth, how could I keep this treasure trove of a store to myself?

Over the weekend I decided to dive into my Hip-Hop collection and relive the classics. From Biz Markie to A Tribe Called Quest; all the legendary New York emcees were present in my apartment. There’s no doubt the music scene here in New York is one of the most eclectic in the world, but are we aware of that In today’s times we take that for granted, especially when it comes to Hip-Hop.

It seems that we’ve forgotten that we live in the birthplace of Hip-Hop and are known across the world for having some of the greatest emcees. I can’t say that I’m surprised considering the majority of the Hip-Hop music getting radio play seems generic, repetitive, and bad!

As Mulberry Street was to Italian immigrants, Mott to Chinese, and Manhattan Avenue to modern Poles, so is West 116th to immigrants from the West African nation of Senegal. It’s a place to shop for clothes, buy plane tickets, pick up a some music, pray, celebrate, eat.  All you want from the Old Country, basically, between 5th and 8th Avenues in Harlem.

Every day offers a glimpse into another world. Women promenade dressed in purple, orange, or yellow iridescent robes, their hair wrapped up in turbans higher than Marge Simpson’s beehive. And often, you hear the quick bursts of French or Africanized Creole. If you want to practice your high school français, there’s probably no better neighborhood in New York to do it.

Unfortunately yours truly has been hit by a double whammy, sinus infection (no biggie) on top of a stomach bug. That’s meant, unfortunately, no fun culinary exploration within the city this past week. But just because I’m eating a bowl of bland oatmeal or toast doesn’t mean you shouldn’t all check out some of these great free offerings available around the city over the next week (and if you know of others, please please add those in the comments - we love that!). This morning I woke up and in what I thought was a dream state, heard Soterios Johnson say that the winds could be up to 40 miles per hour today. Whatever it is you do, no matter how much money you make, may you stay inside today. Forty miles an hour. That is some WTF news.

So, in light of that news, I don’t plan on going out today, except perhaps for my daily walk. In fact I haven’t been going out much lately, which makes Episode Two of Bee Thrifty less exciting.

Less exciting, it’s true, though abundantly more thrifty.

I think we can all learn from it.  So, let us begin.

As much as I boast about an active, healthy sex life, I have never been as in control of it as I was this past weekend. Occasionally, I will have a drink, or two, or several and become a little freer with my body, but this weekend, as I was in the middle of packing for my upcoming move, I got the itch. I figured there were two options and I was totally sick of playing it solo, so I bit the bullet and sent a text to a guy I hooked up with in the neighborhood. All it said was, “I’m horny, are you around?” It was definitely a booty text and I was not ashamed of it either.

When I was making plans with my friend Sarah this week, she sent me four Brooklyn restaurant choices, all with links and menus. Perhaps it’s because I looked at their website first, but Melt was the clear choice for our dinner date.

Situated in Park Slope just a few blocks away from the subways at the Atlantic Terminal, Melt was already winning points for being so conveniently located. For some reason I’d been expecting a bigger restaurant, possibly because their menu was so intriguing. The space was pleasantly small; with room enough for only about seventy people. With modern furniture and clean lines, Melt manages to be sleek and sophisticated without being pretentious.
