I can’t help but notice any time reference is made to Southern cuisine in the city. It is often heavy, greasy food which is stamped “Southern” and allowed to slide by as acceptable. Eh. Pass. But when I read about The Redhead, I knew I had to go. It sounded promising. I had read they have some amazing biscuits, apparently the likes of which are not being rolled out until cold weather. Note to restaurant: there is nothing about biscuits that is required to go with cold weather. Read the rest of this entry »

Q:  I’m a pretty hairy dude.  I have extensive chest and back hair.  My girlfriend hates it and wishes I would at least do something about my back hair.  But she even wants me to maintain my pubic hair as well.  I want her to enjoy my body, but I don’t really have a problem with me as I am.  What do I do?

A:  Ah, compromise, the lynch-pin of any worthwhile relationship and long-time bread and butter of Henry Clay.  You don’t mind allowing the shrubbery to over-run the façade of the house and your girlfriend would much rather you consult with an immigrant skilled in the ways of front-porch manscaping.  Wherever shall the twain meet? Papatzul

After reading Serious Eats’ review of Papatzul’s “under appreciated” food, I decided to return back to check out the place. As I’ve mentioned, I’m always trying to find my go to Mexican spot in the city. Something with good prices, reasonable quality, and a fairly traditional menu. I was curious if this might finally be it.

Happy Friday all!  I will be celebrating my birthday tomorrow under a haze of alcohol and bowling at Gutter, and for a birthday present, how about you do something for me: take that desire you’ve had to get onstage and DO IT THIS WEEK!  There are several improv and stand-up open mics around the city that you can jump on with little to no experience.  Everyone starts somewhere…why not make one of these shows your starting line?

I’m sure many of you think that the time for Restaurant Week has come and gone. But oh no no… there are quite a few restaurants that have extended their participation on through September 1st, but only offering the menu Monday through Friday.

I have mixed feelings about Restaurant Week, which were somewhat confirmed by my two restaurant visits. But that will not keep me from going each time, and I recommend you use it as a good chance to check out some spots you wouldn’t otherwise. I’m a big fan of checking out the regular menus and pinpointing those restaurants where it would be a significant discount. Read the rest of this entry »

duck from queens zoo

I hope you’ll forgive my lag in posting. I went on vacation for the first time in over a year (and also out of the country for the first time in five years). On the journey there—which took entirely too long due to delays and customs—one brave dad had to change a diaper because his son had diarrhea. Consequently, the entire cabin smelled like a giant fart, which was both hilarious and nauseating at the same time. But the real highlight of my trip was the outdoorsy-ness; something I feel whenever I leave the city. In the spirit of the outdoors, I found a roundup of bird-related events (from watching to playing to picture-taking) for children of all ages. No bug bites required.

Q: My girlfriend is really into me.  I know this because after three months of dating, she just dropped the “L” word.  I’ve never told anyone I loved them before and I don’t think I’ll be saying it to her anytime soon.  Is her earnestness a sign of craziness or am I just a cold guy?  Should I tell her I don’t love her?  Remember the first American Pie movie?

A:  Acting like I know the appropriate time to drop the “L” word would be like me telling someone how to raise his kids.  Sure, the tyke might have mysterious bruising, lice and rusty, homemade braces made of razor wire, but it’s just not my place to say anything, especially to the cops.  On the other hand, even though I’ve never been good at standing up to child abusers, I’m pretty good when it comes to love…and sayin’ it.

Starting today, people will be attempting the impossible, pushing through exhaustion and body failure to go the distance in a test of endurance, patience, and skill.

No, not the Olympics. Those are boring. I speak of The Del Close Marathon!

Now in its tenth year, DCM 10 (or DCMX, as it would have been known in 1996) is a 72 hour marathon of improv on 4 different stages in Chelsea. Teams from across the country descend upon Manhattan to be a part of a weekend-long celebration of made-up hilarity.
