The Bruce Springsteen of Queens: Thai Me Up, Thai Me Down

In a historically Irish neighborhood like Sunnyside, few would expect anything worthwhile in the arena of Thai food, Mai Thai boxing or even Thai iced tea. Lucky for us, life is full of surprises, one of the most delightful so far being

DEE Thai Restaurant
46-17 Queens Blvd (Betw. 46th St. and 47th St.)
Sunnyside, NY 11104
Phone: (718) 786-3137

Known affectionately by its regulars as Dee, this diamond in the rough has the basics down pact. Pad thai: phenomenal. Chicken satay: satay your momma. When it comes to the special talents round, there is no dip in performance. The curry puffs: rock your world little country girl good. Drunken noodles: drunk like your Uncle Harry good. Just close your eyes and point.

The atmosphere is quite otherworldly. For God’s sake, listen to the music on the website. I think I might go to Prague and start a monastery for world peace. Meditation aside, Dee manages to mix the trendy relaxed atmosphere of the new-age Thai restaurant with the down-to-Earthness of Queens. So imagine being on the Upper West side and feeling like you all share the same tax bracket. Throw in a few Gregorian chants and you have experienced Dee.

SPRINGSTEEN OF THE WEEK! SPRINGSTEEN OF THE WEEK!

You Make the Call.

From:

IT’S HARD TO BE A SAINT IN THE CITY

I had skin like leather and the diamond-hard look of a cobra
I was born blue and weathered but I burst just like a supernova
I could walk like Brando right into the sun
Then dance just like a Casanova

I would like to take this opportunity to make a huge announcement to my loyal readership: I am opening this badass can of worms to the public.

Who do you think should be Springsteen of the Week? You want to nominate your best friend? Great. You want to nominate yourself? Even better. You want to nominate your mom? The Boss would be proud.

Tell me about it.

I have just one question to ask you: Do you have the fire, intensity and (metaphorical) scruff to be Springsteen of the Week?

You paused. Maybe next week kid, keep at it.

The BSOQ here signing off, saying keep your jeans torn, your fist pumpin’ and your eyes on the stars, keeping that American Dream alive. Who knows? Maybe one day the man (or woman) in this black and white photo wearing that sweet leather jacket could be you . . .

I was the king of the alley, Mama, I could talk some trash
I was the prince of the paupers, crowned downtown at the beggar’s bash

I want to nominate Rusty as the Springsteen of the Week. This week he tolerated 2 different surgeons poking fun of him.

1st surgeon: “Don’t you own a razor?” “I think Don Johnson wants his look back.” Rusty’s response, “I’ve got the white blazer and espadrilles to complete the look.”

2nd surgeon: “What kind of name is ‘Rusty’?” Rusty replied, “yeah I know, usually people tell me they had a dog named ‘Rusty’.” Finished the rest of his shift as ‘Stonewall Chapman’, changed his name on his badge with the label maker, have no idea where he got ‘Stonewall’ from.

Sebra replied, “I love those surgeons and I haven’t even met them. Why don’t you go tan.”
