Family Days: Events for Young Readers

kids books

Today, as I was satiating my daily fill of parenting goodness, I learned that Broadway sensation Bernadette Peters wrote a childrens’ book. Remember, oh two years ago when every celebrity decided to create a clothing line? Apparently the same has happened with childrens’ books. I glazed over when Madonna came out with her books a few years ago. And they weren’t that bad, all things considering. Julianne Moore. Jamie Lee Curtis. Brooke Shields. Tiki Barber. Then I just stopped paying attention. Whether you’re into celeb-written (or ghostwritten) books for yout tots or not, there are plenty of reading-related events coming up. Here are some literary events for the littlest members of your family.

The Harlem Book Fair
Saturday July 19
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Harlem Book Fair. A few events are targeted for younger readers, including a training session on drawing your favorite superheroes. There is also a forum for authors who are interested in writing childrens’ books. Now that I’ve told you the good part, here’s the bad. It’s going to be 90 degrees this weekend and, if this year’s fest is indicative of last year’s it will be extremely crowded. Bring extra water for the kids—and yourself.

Books of Wonder

Thursday July 24
Show and tell is being revamped at this Chelsea bookstore devoted to kids. Join Hilary Knight, Bryan Collier, and other award-winning childrens’ book authors as they share their inspirations and, of course, sign copies for the kids. Did we mention that the event is free? Yep, it is.

Housing Works Bookstore Cafe
August 2 and August 3
In a few weeks, Housing Works will be hosting one of it’s famous book sales. I always like to find out about these in advance so I get first dibs on books. Everything in the store will be at least 30% off.

Bank Street Books
August 2
Are your kids obsessed with Artemis Fowl? Surely, some jokes from bestselling author Eoin Colfer will be the highlight of their weekend. We don’t have a detailed itenerary yet, but be certain that there will be faries, fiends, and maybe an apperance by Mulch Diggums.
