FUNNY VOICES: Rick Shapiro, The Apple Sisters |
This week started on a down note with the death of comedy legend George Carlin. Lots of mournful posts out there, but I don’t think anyone should be mourning. In fact, Carlin would probably give a 15 minute rant on the hero worship that people are bestowing on him post mortem. He never wanted to be someone to look up to; he just wanted to tell the truth. Instead of being sad about it, why not instead go out, live life, and be an honest human?
Okay, back to the comedy.
GO SEE THIS!
Rick Shapiro: Wild Card (Thursday July 3, 8:00 PM, UCB Theatre ; tickets $5.00) – Veteran stand-up comic Rick Shapiro unleashes a full hour set on the teeming masses in a black box theater setting. Plus, it’s only $5.00! Skip a latte this week for this show.
WHY YOU SHOULD GO - In the spirit of Carlin, Shapiro is a guy who is not afraid to speak what he sees is the truth. He is engaging, confrontational, dysfunctional, and above all, hilarious. Shapiro has been around the block and back in New York City, and his stark tales of drug addiction are not for the feint of heart. But if you were feint of heart, you’d probably be staying home to watch your bootleg “Empty Nest” VCDs. Normally, to see him in the city you’d have to pay $30 to suffer through a night of comics who don’t realize that no one gives a shit about Viagara jokes anymore. This is a fantastic chance to see this force of nature up close for only $5.00.
