Waxing Literary: One man’s trash…

If autumn the season for serious media, then summer is all about The Trash. Beach reads, superhero movies, ice cream – no doubt about it, warm weather is guilty pleasure time. And if you’re still nose-deep that thick historical biography once June 21st rolls around then you, sir, are doing it wrong.

This Saturday marked the official first day of summer, and the first of eleven Long Hot Weekends that won’t be complete without some truly trashy reading material. So today on Waxing Literary, I’m pleased to present a roundup of one month’s worth of dirty literary fun.

Go on… you know you want to.

The book: The Ruins, by Scott Smith
Guilty pleasure: Nubile coeds, man-eating vine-creatures, the Mexican jungle.
Maximum naughtiness: Bring it along on your hike to Macchu Piccu.

The book: Flowers in the Attic, by V.C. Andrews
Guilty pleasure: Kids locked in an attic, torrid family secrets, foul murder, and of course, INCEST.
Maximum naughtiness: Read it on a family vacation. (But seriously, that’s gross.)

The book:
The Book of Vice: Very Naughty Things (and how to do them) by Peter Sagal
Guilty pleasure: Swingers’ clubs, strip clubs, gambling clubs, porn, and… NPR.
Maximum naughtiness: Be seen with this book at the Republican National Convention

The book: Gone With the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell
Guilty pleasure: Scarlet freakin’ O’Hara, y’all.
Maximum naughtiness: Read it without ever playing the “But it’s important historical fiction!” card.

I’m taking trashy reading recommendations for a future column. Got something to share? Email me at kat@neighborbeeblog.com.
