FUNNY VOICES: Rock N ROFL Monday!

You know what’s awesome? Comedy.

You know what’s not so awesome? Not a lot of people are well-versed in the scene, thus missing out on a wealth of entertainment in their own backyards.

Enter me.

My name is Matt Little. I am a comedian, actor, and writer. I perform comedy all over town and write for TV, but this column isn’t about me. This column is about YOU, and your lust for comedic entertainment. It’s also about comedy, but that doesn’t sound as sexy in the copy.

I will be your guide to seeing great shows around town that don’t involve the words “drink minimum,” “bringer,” or “Times Square.” I’ll also be featuring vids from NYC-based comedians, interviews, and other whimsical flights of fancy. Consider this my soapbox for why New York is the best city for comedy in the Milky Way or Andromeda galaxies (sorry, Xlrt’son Deebot on Planetoid Xteen, but you know it’s true).

If you want to sound more savvy than the people in your office that get excited about the new season of Mind of Mencia, follow me.

After the jump, more!

Rock N ROFL (8:00 pm Monday Pianos, $12) – Indie music blogger Brooklyn Vegan hosts this monthly combo of solid comedy and great music. This Monday, the ‘Veeg hosts Mike Birbiglia, Dave Hill, Anthony Jeselnik, and Roger Hailes. Also, a live performance by The Futureheads, and free beer!

WHY YOU SHOULD GO – Mike Birbiglia is a future superstar, no two ways about it. His dry storytelling style makes his awkward tales of embarrassment go down as smooth as a summer cocktail. Dave Hill is a one-man entertainment machine, an effortlessly fun performer with the heart of Dean Martin and the dark underbelly of drunk Dean Martin. Anthony Jeselnik knows how to craft a joke, with some of the most clever and surprising punchlines I’ve heard in a long time. And host Roger Hailes can make a show work and control a crowd.

Did I mention the free beer with your ticket? Lots of it. Like, enough that Daniel Plainview would want to show up and take it from you.

Top to bottom, this is the type of show that your kids will hate you for not going to when they’re in their teens, trying to be cool, and rediscover this scene. Kinda like how when you discovered punk and hated your parents for not hanging out at CBGB’s, even though they grew up nowhere near NYC, and were too busy listening to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.

This week’s video comes from actors/comedy writers Chris Gethard and Lennon Parham, entitled “Sensual Stretching.”

Gethard:
Lennon and I improvised a scene about two people who get off on stretching at an Asssscat show at UCB Theater…I merged the idea with all the fear-based health class videos I was forced to watch in middle school. Lennon added all the funny parts; we shot it with Nick Paley, who is a genius.

Chris performs every Friday at 9:30 pm with The Stepfathers at UCB; Lennon performs on Saturdays at 10:30 pm with Reuben Williams at UCB as well.
