New York City Art - Art Colony: The Telectroscope

Telectroscope
Did everyone enjoy their Memorial Day weekend? I sure did. I jumped out of bed in my feetie pajamas as soon the clock chimed 6 o’clock, slid down the fireman pole, and stared with wide-eyed joy at the spread that St. Memorial Day had brought me. There was so many Flag chocolates sitting in the baseball hats that we’d hung from the door knobs. The Royal Oak that we’d chopped down earlier that week looked so majestic. And then there was the gifts! Oh my! Let’s just say that St. Memorial Day was very generous.

So on to the art! It was a mostly slow week since all the galleries are either taking it easy it preparation for everyone being out of town, or ramping up for the up-coming summer shows. The good news is that there is still some art to be had. So we loaded up the Rolls and headed out to see the Telectroscope under the Brooklyn Bridge. What happened to our Handsome Hero? Follow the jump!

So here’s the breakdown on the Telectroscope. It’s the brainchild of Alexander Stanhope St. George in 1877. The idea was a tunnel between New York City and London England (”Cheerio govnah! Fancee a jolly rogah!”). The tunnel was never built but (spoiler alert!) his great grandson Paul St. George picked up where he left off. Using the technologies of the 1870s (namely HD cameras, satellite link ups, and huge HD displays) he has created the Telectroscope installation allowing immediate visual communication between the US and the UK. Everyone caught up?

Good. Here’s the bottom line: it’s pretty cool. Nevermind the crowds or the limited access. Nevermind the ubiquity of video chats, erotic video chats, and super erotic video chats. It’s still pretty interesting.

It’s a big public art display in a beautiful setting that literally spans two continents. What more do you want? A pretty drawing? Well there’s a whiteboard that you can draw a picture of a doggie riding a skateboard over the Grand Canyon. There you go, something for everyone.

I strongly recommend going to see this while it’s still up through June 15th. I also strongly recommend buying yourself flowers and sending them to yourself at work. Lastly I recommend covering yourself in olive oil, getting a running start and sliding down a hill naked (it’s way more sexy than you’d think).
