Gallery Insider: Week of 5/12

Our Gallery Insider is on vacation this week, so to help her out, we’ve enlisted artist and photographer Michael Neff (whose work is pictured above) to give us the lowdown on gallery openings this week. After the jump, Michael tells us about David Shrigley, the Hunter MFA Thesis Exhibition, the NY Photo Festival, and Andrew WK.

See the next batch of art stars before they’ve burned out! The Hunter “MFA Thesis Exhibition” opens tonight at 6.

Thursday, May 15^th

David Shrigley, Anton Kern Gallery, 532 West 20^th Street, 6-8 pm

David Shrigley’s work looks a bit like a cross between the scrawl that the kid in the back of your class was doing on their notebook, something very wicked, and something you just will never understand. Some might call it too informal to be art, but Shrigley’s work has a humor and darkness that make it consistently engaging. Look for a cool and diverse crowd to flock to the opening.

If you’re a photographer or just like them, you’ll want to get over to DUMBO this week. Thursday night the first annual New York Photo Festival hosts “Book Soup: A Photography Panel Discussion and Book
Signing Event” featuring Larry Fink, Jeff Mermelstein, Martin Parr, Tom Roma (for those looking to get into Columbia) and many, many more.

Andrew WK, New Museum, 235 Bowery, 7:30 PM | $10 / $8 Members

If Brooklyn is too far from your home turf, get weird with Andrew WK at the New Museum. It’s only 10 bucks to boot! The New Museum says: “Experimental party starter Andrew WK makes a special solo appearance for May’s Get Weird event. On the heels of his explosive post-frat live shows across the globe, WK has been, of late, handling production duties for Lee “Scratch” Perry, lecturing at Yale, vibing with Will Oldham, spoofing the McLaughlin Group, and performing with avant-folkie Baby Dee and teen supergroup Hanson. We really have no idea what this performance will be like, but we know it will be awesome. And probably weird.”
