New York City Happenings - Bee Scene: Get on the List

Tired of seeking out fun new activities for you and your crew? Let the activities come to you! My social life would be nonexistent if not for the plethora of e-mail alerts I receive every week in my inbox.

One of my longtime favorite lists is Hipster Travel, written by my pal Evan, who I met years ago at an (now defunct) organized social drinking club. (Don’t judge - it’s where I met all my NYC friends!)

Sign up for Hipster Travel and you’ll be sent a weekly e-mail that is chock full of activities, ranging from gallery listings and dance parties to food festivals and free alcohol events. Evan searches for the week’s best offerings and compiles them into one massive e-mail that usually takes me 10 minutes to read. (Mostly because I’m adding so many events to my calendar.)

In this week’s list, I spotted more than five free open bars, numerous art openings, a sample sale offering 5% off, burlesque dancing, a trivia night, one food festival and an arts and crafts fair. And that didn’t even cover one-tenth of the list.

To get on the Hipster Travel mailing list, visit the website or send an e-mail to hipstertravelnycpicks-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

A man of many interests, Evan is also known as DJ Xerox and can be heard spinning biweekly at Copycat: “a night of crazy covers and rocking remixes of all the hits.” Catch him every other Wednesday night at Otto’s Shrunken Head (538 East 14th Street) from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.

Evan also runs a gallery hop group, which meets more infrequently, but always includes at least one art opening that has free wine. Naturally, I’m a big fan. You can join that list by visiting the website or sending an e-mail to galleryhopny-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Sometimes there’s a stop for an early dinner at the famed Grand Sichuan in Chelsea before the gallery tours. Be sure to try the savory soup dumplings.

That should fill your social calendar for a while. And the best part: your friends will think you found all these activities on your own. Go ahead, let ‘em!
