Project Runway may be over (go Team Jillian!), but thankfully you can recreate your favorite pro-run moments, at Home Ec! Just a few blocks walk from the Union Street N/R station, Home Ec opened up last year as a studio for the design trio who comprise Brooklyn-based label & boutique, Flirt. Additionally, they created the space in response to customers who asked for sewing classes. What a girl-tastic idea!
Eschewing the birthday/girl’s night standby of Cosmos & Karaoke, why not grab a bunch of pals and head over to Home Ec for a paradigm-shifting, out-of-the-box bonding experience? They offer classes like tote-making, apron-making, jewelry-crafting, and tailoring your own clothes, so you let out those trousers without having to deal with Mr. Judgy-Pants-Oh-You’ve-Gained-A-Few at the dry-cleaners. A couple of bucks later, you’ll have a custom made item that you made all by yourself (under Home Ec’s guided supervision). Score!
Coming soon is a Make Your Own Flirt Skirt class, where students will be able to construct their very own signature Flirt Skirt, the store’s popular namesake piece. No time to mess with twine? Not a problem: head over to one of the two Flirt boutiques, and you can pick from seven Flirt Skirt designs and among a dizzying number of fabrics and the ladies will stitch you an original, custom piece for $120.
