Art Colony: Buzz On The Streets

Art! Art! Art! Woo Hoo!

Boy, it seemed like last week I had a million awesome exhibits to go to and a line of models/actresses that wanted nothing more than to party. Now, the parties are over, the exhibits are closed, and I’ve got piles of sexy lingerie littering my penthouse apartment.

Because of this turn of events, I’ll take to rounding up some minor things that have been going on around that would be worth visiting. If you’ve got other good recommendations for me, send them along. Oh and if you’re left some of your sexy lingerie at my penthouse, please come by, because that stuff is starting to smell.

Lever House Art Collection

Cool Hunting has a very nice little video (see above) regarding the Lever House Art Collection . For a long time they have played host to a huge variety of progressive and controversial exhibitions (like Damien Hirst and Peter Wegner). Currently they’ve got Richard Dupont’s crazy sculptures of himself. If you’re interested in checking it out, see the short little video above. It’s pretty interesting. Not as interesting as flying an F-16 Tom Cat, but after that mission where I saved all those orphans with my F-16 I kinda compare everything to that.

The Drawing Center - Frederick Kiesler

(via Swiss Miss )

The Drawing Center is host to a retrospective on Frederick Kiesler. The work itself is fine. I went to the opening (yeah, no big deal) and the most interesting thing for me was the actual set up. It’s this long, elliptical display which helps organize his work into different periods. It was made by the nARCHITECTS and not only organizes his work, but also falls in line with his design philosophy of continuity. I bet one day he was all high on goofballs and is like “endless house” and laughed so hard he wrote it down and now they’ve got a retrospective on him. Just another reason not to do drugs kids.

American Folk Art Museum - Dargerism

Want to have your head explode? Then begin doing some research on Henry Darger. Quick run down: worked as a janitor at a hospital, didn’t talk to anyone, died, and when they went to his apartment found a huge world of art that no one knew could exist. I’m talking elaborate paintings of epic battles between little girls and civil war soldiers. And there was all these documents which detailed all the names of the people in the battles. And their back stories. Oh, and the paintings are freaking massive. All this without ever having any art training has made him the poster boy for outsider art. Yeah, pretty nuts isn’t it? This exhibit at the American Folk Art Museum has some of his work as well as others who he influenced. If it sounds like I’m gushing, you’re right. Sometimes I just care a little too much. And sometimes when you’re looking for love, love comes and finds you. (starring Kate Hudson, coming Summer 2008).

If my awesome description made you want to go see this exhibition (and also sample a taste of my lifestyle), there’s a free party on May 16 on 5:30-9. It will feature a bunch of musicians, curator-led tours of the exhibition, and a cash bar with cheap drink specials. I won’t be paying for drinks because I’m too handsome, but you can if you want. For more info or to RSVP, email Folk53@folkartmuseum.org or call 212 977 7170 x329.
