Gallery Insider: Week of 4/21

Like art? Need plans for Thursday and Friday? Want some free booze? Great! You should go to some gallery openings. Gallery Insider is an anonymous gallery employee, and she’s here to give you the inside scoop on where to go and what (and who) to see each week. After the jump, check out her recommendations for Thursday, 4/24, and Friday, 4/25.

Thursday April 24th
Rachel Feinstein, Marianne Boesky Gallery, 509 West 24th Street, 6-8 pm
http://www.marianneboeskygallery.com/
Feinstein always dreams up whimsical worlds of historical opulence that have slightly gone awry. This show is no different, taking its inspiration from royal stagecoaches and medieval tapestries. There is a big following surrounding her and her husband (art world rock-star John Currin), so look for this to be THE opening on the 24th. As an added plus, if you like people watching, there should be plenty of art and fashion world stars here—and maybe a bit of Hollywood thrown in.

Gedi Sibony, Greene Naftali, 508 West 26th Street, 8th Floor, 6-8 pm

When it comes to well-respected and cool galleries, you don’t get much better than Greene Naftali. That said, this is going to be a very art worldy kind of show—if you are incredulous about how a slumped cardboard box could be considered art, stay far away. If the boundaries between life and art interest you, full steam ahead.

Friday, April 25th
“The New Normal”, Artists Space, 38 Greene Street, 3rd Floor, 6-8 pm
www.artistsspace.org
Any opening at Artists Space is sure to be a fun crowd, and “The New Normal” has the added plus of being about artists that take the super-murky (and always intriguing) idea of “private” information as its starting point. These artists look at our culture of omnipresent videotaping, internet monitoring, wiretapping, and how this new paradigm gives easy access to information you want—and really don’t want– to know. Heavy (but pertinent) ideas and a good crowd of artsy grad school types downing plentiful beer means there should be something for everyone.
