Welcome to the Hive of Style

Welcome to the Hive of Style! I’ll be your hostess of this fashionable turn through New York’s best boutiques & shops. New York, arguably the most diverse and stylish city in the US (if not the world), is home to major fashion houses and some of the brightest rising stars of independent design.

Every week, I’ll feature a shop, boutique, local designer, or full-blown department store (and the tricks to scoring the best finds). If you have a favorite spot that consistently outfits you in cutting edge original pieces or stocks the best bargain t-shirts & socks, share! Email me at Angela@neighborbeeblog.com. I’m looking forward to returning the favor by introducing you to fantastic new designers, their wares and of course, where to find them!

Ohm, 246 Smith Street between Douglass & Degraw

I stumbled into Ohm after a lazy brunch in the Carroll Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn. Ohm feels like you stepped into your eccentric Aunt Bee’s giant walk-in closet outfitted with antique dressers, tables and upholstered chairs covered with accessories, scarves, jewelry, and shabby-chic tchotckes. Most of the clothes look like something your eccentric Aunt Bee might wear: loose, swingy skirts in vibrant dyed fabrics, quilted silk walking coats, and flowing tunics. The husband-wife team have over 20 years experience in textiles and design and the fabrics are visually stunning and heavenly to touch even if the designs are less than cutting edge.

Ohm stocks an impressive collection of recycled and re-purposed accessories like bottle cap earrings and Thai Rice bags fashioned into a cosmetic bag. My favorite “green” vendor at Ohm is Crispina - a Massachusetts-based outfit specializing in quilts, throws, and 2″ thick woven rugs all made from recycled sweaters.

Imagine taking 20 of your favorite cashmere sweaters and stitching them up into a super-luxe throw you could curl up under on a rainy movie night at home, and you have a pretty good idea of the Crispina line. A bit pricey ($200+ for a throw, potholder rugs start at $80 for an over-sized welcome mat), these gorgeous throws and rugs are heirloom quality and washing machine safe. Ohm can special order rugs in a variety of colors and sizes upon request.
