On an overcast and somewhat chilly Sunday morning, I was sitting on the sofa, flipping through the TV when I got a text from a friend: Brooklyn Flea today? Perfect!

Turns out, it was opening day, and some 200 vendors set up shop in the 40,000 square foot playground of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, making Brooklyn Flea the largest flea market in New York. Curated by Brownstoner.com, the Flea is open every Sunday from 10 am to 5pm, rain or shine and the offerings include the standard flea finds like vintage clothes and furniture, as well as a glut of talented local jewelry designers.

My favorites after the jump.

Takashi Murakami’s work is not the first to cross industries–industrial production, advertising, fashion, and, oh, yes, art.  The thing is, in this day and age, Murakami’s work is the epitome of what an artist’s career can become–an all-encompassing practice created by a team rather than the sweat of a single individual. While some may take issue with this method of art making, when you look at Murakami’s work you realize that it must truly take an army to achieve the sheer volume and material perfection his work exhibits at every turn. The collaborative effort to realize a single vision is very much a historical concept; how else would Henry Ford have built the first car, any cathedral have been created, or Baron Haussmann created airy avenues through the medieval rat-maze of Paris.  Murakami’s work is just another significant chapter in this lineage.

Art! Art! Art! Woo Hoo!

Boy, it seemed like last week I had a million awesome exhibits to go to and a line of models/actresses that wanted nothing more than to party. Now, the parties are over, the exhibits are closed, and I’ve got piles of sexy lingerie littering my penthouse apartment.

Because of this turn of events, I’ll take to rounding up some minor things that have been going on around that would be worth visiting. If you’ve got other good recommendations for me, send them along. Oh and if you’re left some of your sexy lingerie at my penthouse, please come by, because that stuff is starting to smell.

air hockey in action

In the annals of great bar sports, a few classics come to mind – pool, darts, Big Buck Hunter. These days, however, a classic game is finding new life and making a play to join the mighty triumvirate, at least in the East Village and Alphabet City. That game is Air Hockey, a game long played at seedier dive bars around the Village, and around which has recently coalesced a new bar league: Air Hockey NYC.

I think Victor Hugo himself would have been proud of what Chef Florian Hugo is cooking up. Brasserie Cognac, the newest addition to the Manhattan’s coterie of French restaurants, offers some of the best cuisine the city has to offer.

Coming in, there are a small handful of tables, where patrons this particular evening were enjoying the charcuterie, a beautifully assembled composite of meats, accompanied by a platter of cheeses. The consistency of the cheeses ranged from creamy to more solid.

poireaux vinagrette appetizerMy friend and I both began with the poireaux vinaigrette – a fabulous flavorful appetizer of perfectly assembled braised leeks atop a bed of a shallot marmalade accented with walnuts and grain mustard. The presentation did not disappoint, and the balsamic drizzle seemed to bring out the slightly tart but complimentary flavor of the marmalade.
